WASHINGTON, D.C. July 11, 2010 – (PinoyGlobal) Linda Mayo, is unanimously selected as one of the 2010 Twenty Outstanding Filipinos Abroad (TOFA) by the TOFA Panel Board of Judges headed by Nonoy & Aida Mendoza of the FILIPINO IMAGE MAGAZINE (FILIM) and the PINOY GLOBAL ONLINE NEWS(PGON), and the ROXANNE ANDREA MENDOZA (RAM) MEMORIAL FOUNDATION.

The TOFA project was initiated in 1990 and have been commended by the governments of the United States, Canada and the Philippines. The bio-data of the 320 Past TOFA Awardees are found in the PINOY GLOBAL ON LINE NEWS : HTTP://WWW.FILAMIMAGE.COM, a 24/7 global web site.

The CRITERIA, HISTORY and other TOFA informations are found in the popular website. A complete copy issue of FILIPINO IMAGE Magazine’s 2006, 2007 & 2008 Souvenir Journals, detailing more one hundred pages of biodata of the 2009 TOFA awardees and photographs; VIP Special Messages and including all the Congratulatory Messages and ADs, in full color, are in the website and free for all to read globally. An unprecedented feat in Filipino journalism. The 3-day 14th annual event starts on Thursday, Sept. 09, 2010 with an informal get -together for the awardees and their special guests. The following, Friday, Sept. 10th, the VIP Luncheon at JW Marriott Hotel, and at night, the fabulous welcome dinner reception at the Philippine Embassy. The following day, Saturday, Sept. 11th, a sight-seeing tour, and photo opportunity around the Nations’ Capital, capped with a memorable VIP Dim Sum Luncheon. At night, Saturday, Sept. 11, 2010, is a formal gala Banquet and Ball Award Ceremony.

After the gala is the traditional Filipino breakfast which will end the whirlwind social functions. Linda Mayo is the founder and Executive Director of Pan American Concerned Citizens Action League, Inc., a nonprofit 501 (c3) organization serving the health and human service needs of the Filipinos and other Asians in Hudson County. Ms. Mayo has 23 years of experience in grassroots community organizing. In 1986, she organized the International Montgomery Gateway West Neighborhood Association (IMGWA) consisting of a majority of Filipinos, Asian Indians, Pakistanis, Koreans, Chinese and for added measure some Irish, Italians, African Americans and Hispanics. This new community development in downtown Jersey City at that time was being plagued by robberies, house break-ins and muggings. After Ms. Mayo organized the community, it soon became one of the safest neighborhoods in Jersey City as evidenced by Police records. She then moved to become the president of the Downtown Coalition of Neighborhood Associations which consisted of Van Vorst Park, Harsimus Cove, Hamilton Park, Paulus Hook and IMGWA which actively advocated for various issues affecting the neighborhood.

Ms. Mayo’s focus and years of dedication in community organizing did not go unnoticed. In 1992, Governor Jim Florio appointed her as the Filipino representative to the Governor’s Ethnic Advisory Council. From there, Ms. Mayo advocated for Filipinos and other Asian’s government participation like the appointment of the first Filipino member of the New Jersey State Board of Nursing and appointments of Filipinos to various boards and commissions in Jersey City.

On Monday, May 31st, Memorial Day, Pan American Concerned Citizens Action League, Inc. (PACCAL); the Philippine American Veterans Organization, Inc. (PAVO) and the Filipino American National Historical Society, New Jersey Chapter (FANHS NJ), held a memorial service for Filipino-American World War II veterans.

Linda Mayo, PACCAL executive director remembered the late Col. Mariano S. Aureus who together with other WWII veterans founded PAVO to start the fight for equity which they finally won after more than 60 years of fighting for it. She thanked all the veterans both living and dead and extolled on their heroism.

Jose G. Red, a WWII veteran who led the service was passionate in his speech and spoke about his fallen comrades who had fought side-by-side with their American comrades in their quest for freedom and democracy.

Fred T. Diaz and Nick Casino, both WWII veterans who had already celebrated their 93rd birthdays blurted a duet of “Bayan Ko” which inspired the crowd to join in. The other veteran present was Espiridion Villanueva who was very thankful of receiving the $15,000 equity although it might be too little too late.

Nestor Enriquez, FANHS NJ president spoke about the historical aspect of Filipinos participating in the Census 2010. He said that 75 years from now, our great grandchildren can do research on history and use the Census data to find where their great grandparents lived. Mr. Enriquez stated that’s how he found out information he used for his historical research in Filipino immigrants in New Jersey.

Patricia Green, Census community partner specialist said it is still not too late to participate in the Census 2010. She added, if the enumerators come knocking on your doors to fully cooperate with them.

Pan American Concerned Citizens Action League, Inc. (PACCAL) through a grant from the Asian American Federation has launched a massive campaign for Filipinos to mail back their Census 2010 Survey forms. PACCAL outreach workers and volunteers wearing uniform Census 2010 T-Shirts and equipped with Census flyers, posters and giveaways are pounding Jersey City streets to increase the return of the Census survey forms by Filipinos in Jersey City.

In the last Census ten years ago, the Filipinos in Jersey City were so undercounted. One proof was that the Greenville section showed more Filipinos residing there when Westside Avenue actually has triple the Filipino population in Jersey City. Last April 10, during the March to the Mailbox campaign, PACCAL members, volunteers and a group of youth marched on the streets of Montgomery St. and on Westside Avenue going door to door in the heavily populated Filipino areas. On March 27th, PACCAL already had a blitz on Newark Avenue’s Filipino business district.

Virgie Alvarez, observed during her outreach: “It takes me awhile to convince some of our kababayans to fill out the forms. Sometimes it is because they are afraid it might harm them or sometimes, they are just too busy and don’t care. “

Linda Mayo, PACCAL Executive Director said: “Census participation by Filipinos is really so important if we want to have a voice in the government. The benefits of being counted is so vital for our community because it determines the distribution of federal funds and resources which affect each one of us in our community. If we have the numbers, we can have a voice in the government. “

Betty Buenviaje, and Rose Javier, PACCAL President and Vice President respectively joined the campaign in talking and convincing every Filipinos they meet on the streets to return back their forms. There’s still time to mail it back, they both said. Although the April 19 Census deadline is passed, it only means that Census enumerators will be knocking on doors of those who did not return back their Census survey forms.

Starting May 1st, Census enumerators will visit residences who have not returned their Census forms. Some residences that will be visited by enumerators may have already returned their forms. However, either the forms are still being processed or still on the way. Whatever the case, if the enumerators knock on your doors, please be cooperative or else they will keep on coming back to your address. It is alright to have duplicate information sent than nothing at all.

PACCAL’s message to the Filipino community: Mail it back! Mail it back! Mail it back!

Looking for William was initially staged in Jersey City, New Jersey in March 2004 under the auspices of the Philippine-American Friendship Committee (PAFCOM). In August 2004, PAFCOM collaborated with the Office of the Consul General, New York and presented Looking for William at the Kalayaan Hall Auditorium at the Philippine Consulate, Manhattan, NY in connection with Hon. Consul General Cecilia Rebong’s Classroom Galing sa Mamamayang Pilipino project. In July 2005, the play was staged in the Bergen County by the Filipino-American Association of Fair Lawn for the benefits of the recipients of the Gawad-Kalinga project in the Philippines.

Under the new title “Sunrise, Sunset: Looking for William,” the play touches on issues and conflicts encountered by the Filipino-American youth in their life here in America and the challenge faced by the community and authorities in handling the problems of these youth. As well, the play will give the audience a glimpse of Philippine history through its inclusion of scenes depicting events that actually took place in our country at one time or another. Most important of all, the play imparts the messages of love of country, love of others and above all – love and fear of God. Among the highlights of the play are the “appearances” of iconic political figures in the Philippines such as the late Jaime Cardinal Sin, Kris Aquino, Imelda Marcos, and the Patroness of Democracy, Pres. Cory Aquino.

The Pan American Concerned Citizen’s Action League, Inc. or PACCAL is staging the play “Dust Castles” (please see attached poster) in cooperation with the Jersey City Free Public Library on Saturday, May 30, 2009, at 2 pm, at the Five Corners Library Auditorium, at 678 Newark Avenue, Jersey City, New Jersey. With setting in the Philippines, the play chronicles the lives of eight childhood friends whose young dreams were affected by the onset of World War II. Together they built their hopes for the future, only to be rudely interrupted by the ugliness of war. As well, the play touches on the issues of problems and challenges that immigrant families now and then face in a newfound land.

“Dust Castles” will treat the audience to an hour of unique theatre experience as the play will also showcase the Philippine culture through folk dances featuring the terpsichorean talents of Ms. Virgie Alvarez, famed folk dance choreographer, and her New Jersey Dance Theatre Ensemble. The cast will be supported by members of the Rejoice for God The Greatest Artist Acting Group (RFGAG) who have acted in such plays as Looking for William, Father on Earth… Father in Heaven, Ang Pagbabalik Ni Nonong, Ang Aginaldo, Sandcastles on the Hill, Ang Nobya Ko’ng Arabyana, How To Cook Adobo, and other stage outings presented in the NY-NJ area.

“Dust Castles” hopes to convery the overall message which is about hanging on to one’s faith in GOD and allowing the positive power of forgiveness, hope, selflessness, and above all – love – to prevail.

NEWARK, NJ— The Pan American Concerned Citizens Action League, Inc. (PACCAL) held its 10th Annual Women’s History Month Celebration by honoring Filipino-American women achievers in their respective fields at a gala event held on Sunday, March 29.

Consul General Cecile Rebong, in a written message, extolled PACCAL for helping instill women’s consciousness in the community and the awardees for their achievements that inspire others to follow their examples.

“I am glad that there in the U.S. and in the Philippines, women are given equal opportunities and many of them have, in fact, distinguished themselves and excelled in their chosen professions,” ConGen Rebong said.

Betty Buenviaje, PACCAL’s president, on the other hand challenged the evening’s guests to face the challenging times ahead. “I believe that as a woman and a community leader, there are many challenges that we must tackle head-on. There are many times that we may feel discouraged because of the pressure, but with the strength that God gives us, we can overcome them all,” she explained.

This year’s women achievers awardees are Ledy Almadin (community service), Analisa Balares (young professional), Zorayda Baluyot de Leon, M.D. (medial profession), Araceli Mendoza, R.N. (nursing profession), Juliet Payabyab (humanitarian), Corazon Rivera (business), Rhodora Ursua (health and human serice) and Maureen Javier Varco (performing arts).

Analisa Balares, CEO and founder of Womensphere, honored her grandmothers as she delivered the response on behalf of the eight other awardees.

“My perspective now on the role of women in the society and everything I do now is shaped in large part by the legacy of my parents, and my grandmothers,” she shared.

Balares explained that her parents were both raised by women who got widowed early in life, and eventually became responsible in raising their respective families as single mothers.

“My grandmothers were strong and powerful women. They did everything—from washing other people’s clothes to planting rice to planting and selling vegetables and fish to growing copra—to raise their families. Not only did they raise my parents with dignity and values, they raised them with a love for life, a deep sense of faith and generosity of spirit that defy the fact that they were in an impoverished situation,” Balares added.
Every year for the past ten years, PACCAL has been celebrating the courage, vision and determination of women, through the organization’s Women Achiever Awards.

“I reminisce 10 years ago when PACCAL first started celebrating the achievements of Filipino-American women,” Linda Mayo, PACCAL’s executive director wrote on her message. “I look back at the wonderful contributions of women around the world, fighting for the right of suffrage, for education, for battered women, for equal rights,” she added.

This year’s awardees come from diverse fields.

Rosemarie Parreno received her award for her efforts in the field of education, specifically for her efforts in teaching English as a second language. Last month, New York Times honored Parreno at the New York Times ESOL Teacher of the Year awards.

Parreno currently teaches ESL (English as Second Language) at Hostos Community College in the Bronx and at P.S. 75. She arrived in the US as an exchange teacher scholar at the Northern Illinois University. Prior to this post, she was an ESL teacher/supervisor at the International Catholic Migration Commission (ICMC), a US-funded organization for refugees bound for America.

Ledy Almadin is the awardee in the field of community service. She is currently the president of the Catholic Action of Mary, a lay organization at the Resurrection Parish in Jersey City. The organization sponsors many religious activities in the community such as the Pabasa, Salubong, Simbang Gabi, pilgrimages and the Santacruzan.

Dr. Zorayda de Leon is the current president of the Hudson County Medical Society and as such, she has been very active in raising funds for the organization’s various medical missions. Araceli Mendoza, the current associate director in the Renal Division of the Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City and the Vice President of the Philippine Nurses Association of New York, is this year’s awardee in the field of nursing.

Juliet Payabyab is no stranger to community service as well and this year, her humanitarian efforts are being recognized by PACCAL. Payabyab is the first woman president of the Philam Lions Club, the first Filipino Lions Club in the East Coast. She was also a two-term president of the Philippine American Communities Executive Council (PACEC), an umbrella organization of Filipino American civic organizations.

In the field of business, this year’s awardee is Corazon Rivera, the indefatigable woman behind Bona Tierra Realty, which she established with her family back in 1988. Rhodora Ursua, on the other hand, is the honoree in the field of health and human service. Ursua is the director of Project Aspire, a community-based research project aimed at improving health access and cardiovascular health status of Filipinos in NYC and Jersey City.

Maureen Varco is the lead female vocalist for Opera 3000 and has performed in numerous shows and theatre productions. She is this year’s honoree in the field of performing arts. (Momar Visaya)
